Forest Junior Badminton Club

Forest Badminton Club encourages children between the ages of 11 to 17 in the Horsham area to enjoy playing badminton. We aim to develop each child’s full potential with links to Badminton performance centres and county training as well as to our senior club.

Session Location

We normally meet in a six court sports hall at Tanbridge House School, but when necessary other venues in Horsham.
Details of Term dates, session plans and any changes in venues will be circulated by email in advance

Session Details

The session starts promptly at 5:30pm and follows Badminton England requirements for a warm-up session which reduces the risk of injuries. Please bring a drinks bottle; drinking water is available at the hall.

Our junior coach will develop students technique, footwork and tactics as the students progress through the terms and years. Juniors will be able to take annual bronze/silver/gold assessments and eventually graduate to the senior club.

Training Kit

Children must wear trainers or badminton shoes to avoid injury.
The floors are cleaned prior to our sessions so it is important that mud is not brought into the hall on footwear. Any clothing suitable for sport is fine, and we have a Club T shirt which will be given on payment of the first term’s fees.
We have a limited number of rackets to lend to new members before they need to commit to getting a racket.

Membership Fees

Charges cover the hire of the courts, equipment purchases (including shuttles) and coaching costs. Payment must be made in advance by the first session of each term. Fees for 2025-26 season will be ÂŁ63 – winter term, ÂŁ63 – spring term and ÂŁ24 – summer term

Payment is via bank transfer. 10% Discount for second sibling.

New members must complete a registration form and return to the Junior Coach or Junior Coordinator. This will include details of any medical conditions that may affect the player and provide emergency contact details.

Parents/Carers

We welcome parents and carers to all training and competitions and value your support.  Please make use of the balcony at Tanbridge accessed from the stairs at the far end of the entrance lobby which gives a good view of all the courts in the sports hall.  No smoking is allowed anywhere on school premises.

Coaching

From September 2025, John Molyneux has taken over as Head Coach for Juniors Club following Gill Fairhams’ retirement at the end of 2024 season.

John has been coaching for over 40 years most recently as Head of Badminton at Wilson’s school in Surrey.  He has a wide coaching experience from running his own junior club, to coaching the Surrey U.17 squad and one to one coaching at County level for juniors and seniors.

As a player he has represented Surrey and Hampshire at senior level and England many times at Masters level.  In 2024 he won the National title at doubles in his age group as well as the All England.  Before that he and his partner have also won the European championships and a bronze medal in the World championships at over 55.

Johns approach:

I really enjoy working with junior players, with emphasis on enjoyment but with good technique and developing tactical awareness. Realising potential is important as is helping develop a good skill level and love of the game
